Why is it Important to Know When to Rotate Tires?

When you know how often you should rotate your tires, you’re doing the best thing to help your tires wear evenly. When your tires wear evenly, you’ll have better traction on slick or uneven roads, less road noise, and less strain on your drivetrain. Plus, knowing when to rotate your tires can help prolong their lives by making it less likely that you’ll experience a flat or blowout.

How Many Miles to Rotate Tires on AWD Vehicles

Different drivetrains have different recommended tire rotation patterns. In AWD vehicles, power is sent to either the front or rear axle, depending on which one needs it the most. This helps tires wear more evenly than other drivetrains, so you’ll only need to rotate your AWD tires every 3,000-5,000 miles. However, if you take your AWD vehicle off-roading, drive a lot of highway miles, or do a lot of towing or hauling, you’ll want to rotate your tires sooner than later. Check your owner’s manual for the exact mileage that tire rotation is recommended for your vehicle.

When to Rotate Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

Camilla drivers who have FWD or RWD vehicles will have different rotation patterns recommended than the AWD rotation pattern. That’s because only one axle gets extra power boosts. In FWD it’s the front axle, while the rear axle gets more power in RWD. Tires that get more power will wear faster than the others. For 2WD vehicles, your miles-to-rotate tires are 5,000-7,000 miles. But again, check your owner’s manual for the exact number. To ensure your vehicle is in the position to get the most even tire wear, follow these rotation patterns:

  • When rotating the tires on a vehicle with FWD, the rear right tire moves to the front left, and the rear left tire moves to the front right. The front tires can remain on the same side when moved to the back.
  • For a car with RWD, simply invert the aforementioned pattern. You’ll move the front right tire to the rear left, and the front left tire to the rear right. Then, the rear tires will stay on the same side when moved to the front.
